MISSOULA - Authorities have identified Roberta Demmert as the woman who died after being hit by an alleged drunk driver while she was walking on a sidewalk along North Fifth Street West.
Demmert, 39, was a deaf mother of three children.
Demmert and her sister were walking on the sidewalk when they were hit by a pickup truck reportedly driven by Tom Vineyard, 38, just before 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh says officers found the women lying on the ground and the vehicle tipped on its side in the front yard of a residence.
The women were taken by ambulance to St. Patrick Hospital, where Welsh says Roberta passed away.
Her sister has what have been described as serious injuries, including a broken leg.
Authorities found Vineyard in the cab of his pickup truck that had flipped onto its side, and court papers state he told police that he had consumed two pitchers of beer while in downtown Missoula.
Initial reports indicate that he had a .239 blood alcohol content when he was tested after the crash, nearly three times the legal limit.
The charging documents further state that Vineyard told officers that "he was at fault and wanted to take responsibility for his actions."
He has been charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence and negligent vehicular assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
Vineyard is expected to face a judge in Missoula courtroom on Thursday afternoon.
