CANTON — A man was struck by a car early Wednesday morning, and the driver sped away.

Police officer D.C. Fitzgerald said the victim was treated at an area hospital for cuts and a bump on the head and released. Police described the man as a deaf mute.

The driver of the car was later arrested and cited for leaving the scene of the crash, Fitzgerald said. The charge is a misdemeanor.

The victim was struck while walking at Willowrow Avenue and 22nd Street NE at 6:05 a.m., he said. Police said the street was not lighted, the sky was still dark at that time and the victim could not hear the vehicle coming behind him.

The names of the victim and the man cited were not available as a police report was incomplete, police said.
