Wave smashes boat, leaves Conway man missing
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Coast Guard was looking for a Conway man after a wave smashed into a fishing boat off the North Carolina coast.
Coast Guard officials did not immediately identify the man who authorities say disappeared Saturday in 12-foot seas when winds were up to 70 miles per hour winds.
Three people were on The Tracy Lynn when a wave crashed into the 50-foot boat about 50 miles off Cape Fear, N.C., family members said.
Laura Abernathy said her brother-in-law, Tony Bessent, was drinking coffee on the boat when he looked up and "saw a 30- to 40-foot wave coming."
"The wave just disintegrated the boat," Abernathy said.
Relatives identified the missing man as 36-year-old Johnny Wayne Brown, who is deaf and mute. Brown, a graduate of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind has been fishing since he was in high school, relatives said. He was getting married on June 11.
A container ship rescued Bessent, family members said. Coast Guard spokeswoman Krys Hannum says the second man was found and rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter out of Elizabeth City, N.C., and taken to New Hanover Hospital in New Hanover, N.C.
