KUALA LUMPUR: Given the rapid hand gestures, occasional nods and cheerful expression on his face, one would have thought Indonesian Amrizal Ali Muzar was playing a game of charade with the woman in front of him.

But this was actually a scene in a magistrate’s court here, and the 35-year-old durian seller, who is deaf, was facing a charge of theft.

The woman in front of him was an interpreter signing the charge to him.

As the interpreter took a look at the charge sheet and proceeded to sign to Amrizal, he nodded, pointed at the document and smiled in agreement to show that he understood the charge and admitted to committing the offence.

The entire courtroom fell silent and everyone appeared fascinated by how the hearing was being conducted.

Some were seen flashing a smile or two over the gestures and facial expressions displayed by the accused and the interpreter.

Amrizal admitted to snatching a gold chain worth RM300 from the three-year-old niece of a policeman at a pasar malam near Masjid Jamek in Sungai Besi on June 18 about 8.30pm.

Pleading for a lighter sentence, Amrizal told the court he was a widower – his wife had died after delivering their child, now three years old.

Amrizal, who is illiterate, claimed that he had committed the crime as a result of being influenced by his peers, but now repented his action.

Prosecuting officer C/Insp Tan Boon Sing, however, urged the court to take into consideration the fact that the victim was a three-year-old girl.

Magistrate Nazran Mohd Sham sentenced Amrizal to four months’ jail from the date of his arrest.

When the interpreter conveyed the sentence to him, Amrizal nodded and a sombre expression replaced the cheerful look on his face.
