A tense standoff with a deaf man ended peacefully early Wednesday after negotiators coaxed the suspect into custody using a teletypewriter, a device that allows messages to be typed and delivered by telephone.
Edmonton police were called to a home on Mill Woods Road East near 15th Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday after reports of a domestic disturbance between a man and a woman, both of whom are hearing impaired. Neighbours said they heard hollering and pounding next door, and when police arrived, the woman escaped from the house. The man, however, locked the door behind her. Officers were told he had a knife, and possibly a gun, and the tactical unit was called.
They arrived with rifles and an armoured vehicle. The road was shut down as a police negotiator attempted to communicate with the man inside. A loud hail or telephone call would not work in this case. Officers instead used a teletypewriter.
After nearly five hours barricaded inside the suite, the man emerged willingly and was arrested by tactical officers shortly after 1 a.m.
Kevin Thomas Wilson, 45, was charged with sexual assault, assault, possession of a weapon, assault with a weapon and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
