Deaf Greenvale girl to resume school next term - Leader News: Melbourne community news

A DEAF Greenvale girl kept home from school over a State Government refusal to pay her bus fare will return to class next term.

The Cardamone family plans to accept an Education Department proposal that would see Jindesa, 10, attend Willmott Park Primary School, in Craigieburn.

"The Education Department has agreed there will be a qualified teacher of the deaf present throughout her classes at Willmott Park," Jindesa's father Tony Cardamone said. "We are still waiting on the outcome for transport assistance.

"We've asked the Education Department to go away and review the transport requirements, since we've (now) chosen the nearest deaf facility."

Jindesa had been kept home because the State Government refused to pay for her to catch a bus to St Albans East Primary School.

Department spokeswoman Anna Malbon said Jindesa was eligible for a conveyance allowance of up to $2000 now she would be attending her nearest deaf facility.

The Department had said Willmott Park, closer to the Cardomone family home, was able to meet her needs. The proposal was put forward at a meeting last Thursday, organised after a Leader report on March 11.
