Deaf Games start in Geelong | Geelong, VIC, Australia

THE 2012 Australian Deaf Games kicks off in Geelong on Saturday with an opening ceremony at The Arena from 5.30pm.

The Deaf Games run from January 14-21, attracting 900 athletes from Australia and the Pacific region and up to 1500 visitors, including families and volunteers.

Held every four years since the games began in 1964, it is only the second time the event has been held outside a capital city, and the first time in Victoria for 30 years.

The weeklong event involves 16 different sports played at venues in and around Geelong. The games will also include a strong social and cultural event calendar.

Deaf Sports Australia president Brent Phillips said his organisation was thrilled to bring the games to Geelong.

``One of the key factors in selecting Geelong as the host city for the 2012 Games was the city's desire to embrace the deaf community and Auslan through initiatives such as providing deaf awareness training for local volunteers and businesses,'' he said.

``Geelong will be the centre of the Australian deaf community for eight days and I have no doubt the people of Geelong will show their hospitality, friendliness and diversity.''

The Deaf community communicates primarily using Australian sign language, known as Auslan.
