Ahead of the forthcoming 4th National Deaf Football Challenge Cup, scheduled to hold in Minna, Niger State between September 17th and 27th, some handicapped youths on Monday stormed the Government House, Owerri to protest the non-release of N2.3 million to facilitate their participation.

The handicapped under the aegis of Imo State Deaf Sports Association were led on the peacefeul demonstration by Mr Uzoma Edwards, vice-president, Nigeria Deaf Sports Federation, and Mr Anthony Ibe, team manager, Imo Deaf Sports Association.

Tidesports reports that the youths in thousands conveyed their grievances through writing and display of placards.

Some of the inscriptions on the placards recorded by Tidesports read in parts, “Imo Deaf Association, beg to help us to realise N2.315,600 for Minna, Niger State Challenge Cup football.

“Please, kindly release the money for our football championship in Minna on 17th – 27th 2006”.

“His Excellency, Deaf Football FC Imo Deaf Sports Association beg you to order sports commissioner to release N2.3m to us.

Tidesports gathered that the tournament as a means of discovering hidden talents among the handicapped for international exposure, was earlier scheduled to hold on July 5 to August but was later re-scheduled for September 17 to 27.

To ensure that the team attend the tournament, the principal Secretary to the Governor, Ichie Fide Nwogu in a letter with reference No GH/PL/S.261/XX/47 dated 6th July, 2006 addressed to the Hon Commissioner for finance, declared that the Deputy Governor has approved the release of the sum of N2,365,100.00 to enable the Imo State Deaf Sports Association and officials to travel to Minna, Niger State.

According to the Principal Secretary, a copy of the letter was to the Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Youth and Sports for him to disburse the money to the Director of Sports and to the Secretary, Imo Deaf Sports Association, for onward distribution o the officials and beneficiaries.

As at press time on Tuesday, this had not been done.
