Deaf Expo Unites and Informs
Their voices are rarely heard in our community -- but today they made their presence known.
Many people who are deaf and hard of hearing attended a Deaf Expo in Springfield.
The event was organized by the Deaf Awareness Group to unite people and inform people of deaf services available in the Ozarks.
They also talked with legislators about the shortage of programs for people who use sign language to communicate.
They told the lawmakers that the absence of mental health programs and opportunities for independent living for the deaf are the most troublesome.
Greg Forbes attended the Deaf Expo and says, "It can be interpreting needs, mental health needs, job issues and even life issues. There are a lot of very general needs not being met right now."
The Deaf Expo wrapped up Deaf Awareness Week which included a picnic for all of the 150 deaf students going to schools in the Ozarks.
