MaineToday.com | News Update: Deaf culture festival to be held Saturday

The Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing/The Governor Baxter School for the Deaf is sponsoring the 14th Annual Deaf Culture Festival on Saturday. The festival is a celebration of Deaf Awareness Week in Maine.

The festival offers a mix of education, information and fun for members of the deaf community and anyone interested in deaf culture, deaf history and American Sign Language. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mackworth Island in Falmouth, followed by a 7:30 p.m. performance by two deaf performance artists at Portland High School.

Daytime events, which are free of charge, include an informational expo, telecommunications technology vendor, arts and crafts, children’s events with face painting and scarecrow building, a Maine Deaf Bikers motorcycle show and more.

The evening performance by internationally-known deaf performance artists Mindy Moore and Theron Parker will be in the auditorium at Portland High School. Tickets, which will be available at the door or at the festival, are $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12, seniors, and students.
