RIT - NTID - NTID News - Deaf Culture and Audism is the Focus for Campus Week of Dialogue

The 11th annual Campus Week of Dialogue at RIT and NTID begins Oct. 27 with one of the country's strongest advocates for Deaf Culture: Martina Bienvenu.

Known to many as "MJ," Bienvenu, chair of the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Department at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., will address the community from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, in Ingle Auditorium on the RIT campus. Her topic, "Deaf Culture and Deafhood" will touch upon the evolving interactions around community identity within Deaf Culture.

The Campus Week of Dialogue is one of several annual programs presented by the RIT President's Commission on Pluralism and Inclusion. Each year, the Campus Week of Dialogue spotlights current issues, trends and conversations taking place on campus related to diversity.

Deafhood and audism - defined as bias against Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals - will be discussed throughout the week. Suggestions to better understand its implications within interpersonal relationships will be encouraged.

The 2008 Campus Week of Dialogue workshops include:

Tues., Oct. 28:

* 9 to 10 a.m., Organizational Communication and the Deaf Employee, student panel, NTID, Student Development Center Room 1310.

* Noon to 1:30 p.m.: Diversity within the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture, panel discussion with moderator Patricia Durr, SDC Room 1310.

Wed., Oct. 29:

* 10-11:30 a.m. Video Presentation and Discussion: "Audism Unveiled," shows a series of interviews with Deaf and hard-of-hearing people recounting their experiences from job discrimination, attempts to 'cure' deafness to miscommunication with other individuals. Moderated by Barbara Ray Holcomb and J. Matt Searls, SDC Room 1300.

Thurs., Oct. 30:

* Noon-1:30 p.m. "Signing in Public Spaces," clips from past NTID communication forums urging all NTID faculty and staff to sign when in NTID public spaces, presented by Peter Hauser, SDC Room 1310.

Fri., Oct. 31:

* 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Training Workshop: Hearing Professors, Deaf Students, Interpreters, Note-Takers and C-Print Staff - Building a Team for Academic Success. This workshop should help non-signing hearing faculty develop skills to build more inclusive classrooms. Presented by Rebecca Edwards, SDC Room 2102.

All programs will be sign and voice interpreted. They are free and open to faculty, staff, students, alumni, administrators and colleagues within the Rochester community.

Advance registration is encouraged. The schedule of all the workshop programs and descriptions also allows on-campus guests to register. Off campus guests can register by contacting Michelle Cometa at macits@rit.edu.
