The Fiji Association of the Deaf has received a grant of $61,000 from the Australian Government in its effort to produce Fiji first sign language dictionary.

"It is expected that the project will take at least two years to complete.

"The workshop is the first step of the project," said association president Serevi Rokotuibua.

"The association will start the first of a series of workshops to start the process of creating Fiji's first sign language dictionary.

"We want to involve all deaf people in Fiji in compiling the dictionary so that it will be something they can be proud of and have ownership of."

Mr Rokotuibau said deaf people all over the world had their own sign language and dictionary and benefit from having their own unique language.

"It is important to remember that just as each country of the world has its spoken language, deaf communities all over the world have their own sign language," he said.

"Deaf people in Fiji are very excited about developing and growing their own sign language and will be proud to have a dictionary that can be used in areas of life."

A series of workshops are being held in Suva and will finish on September 10 at the Salvation Army training centre at 54 McGregor Road from 9am to 4pm.

In Lautoka, the workshop will be held at the Salvation Army branch at Waiyavi from September 17 and September 24 at the Kshatriya hall.

"All the workshops will be held in Fiji sign language.

Our association is a self-help group which was established in 2002 and run by deaf people for deaf people," Mr Rokotuibua said.
