Deaf Community To Visit Police (from Somerset County Gazette)

POLICE in Somerset are inviting members of the deaf and hard of hearing community to visit the communications department at Police headquarters in Portishead on Saturday, May 5.

Those who attend the event will get to meet with their local Police Link Officers for the Deaf (PLOD) and learn more about communicating with their local police force.

They will also have the chance to talk to staff in the communications department, ask questions as well as share their own needs and concerns.

The PLOD initiative aims to build on the links between the police and the deaf community and to encourage more communication.

Deputy Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Constabulary Rob Beckley said: "All members of the community in Avon and Somerset should expect the same high standard of service from the police, and that includes ease of access to those services.

"The PLOD scheme allows us to communicate far more effectively with the deaf and hard of hearing community and gives them a specific point of contact.

"The PLOD team of officers and staff offer specialist awareness and skills which are invaluable for the deaf people we deal with.

"This event will give the deaf communities an insight into the efforts we are making to meet their needs, and an opportunity to feed their views back to us."

The day will run from 10am to 4pm but as there are a limited number of spaces available on the day, places will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

All those wanting to attend should contact Steve Vaughan in the Diversity Unit on 01275-816 859 or email equalopportunities@avonandsomerset.police.uk.
