Deaf community learns fire safety : News : KXRM FOX21

The Colorado Springs Fire Department held a fire safety presentation for the deaf community Monday night at the Colorado Springs Independence Center. It does regular presentations for students at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind. However, this presentation was a first, reaching out to the adult deaf community.

In an emergency, instead of just dialing 9-1-1 and talking with an operator, the deaf need a Tele-Typewriter or TTY.

C.S.F.D. Education Specialist Marta Dubay said, "Think about writing everything you need to write to communicate. It's definitely a much longer process than just talking."

The deaf also need specialized smoke alarms. They are not cheap, ranging between 50 and 500 dollars.

Dubay said, "We bring information to them about the strobe smoke alarms that will actually wake them up because the light is so bright. And there's even vibrating smoke alarms for your bed so they wake you up in the middle of the night."

There are financial aide opportunities for the deaf community, to help pay for those specialized smoke alarms. For more information, contact the Colorado Springs Independence Center at (719) 471-8181 or TTY (719) 471-2076.
