icCoventry - Deaf comic's bar date

COMEDY fans going to see stand-up Steve Day performing at a Coventry bar next week needn't bother heckling him - he's the UK's only deaf comedian and he won't hear a word!

Steve is performing at Carey's, in Hertford Place, The Butts, as part of the venue's twice monthly Stand-up Wednesdays event.

The 44-year-old from Stevenage has been 70 per cent deaf since he was 18, although he admits: "Sometimes I say 75 per cent for a touch of Las Vegas."

He started doing stand-up comedy seven years ago and has performed on TV and radio as well as all over Britain.

Steve's material pokes fun at his condition - his own website tag line reads "The UK's only deaf comedian. If there are any others he hasn't heard them."

He gets a lot of support from other deaf people but he also gets the occasional hate letter.

Steve said: "It's main-ly from profoundly deaf people who feel that I shouldn't be making light of deafness. But mainly it's positive."

Also performing on Wednesday, February 7 at Carey's are comedians Simon Bligh, Ali Cook and Rob Collins.
