Deaf children in plea to Assembly (From South Wales Argus)

DEAF children from all over Gwent are heading to the Senedd to call on Assembly members to improve education and services provision for deaf children in Wales.

Youngsters from Llantarnam Comprehensive School, Cwmbran, along with deaf children from around the area, are taking part in the National Deaf Children’s Society Cymru’s ‘If I could change one thing’ poster campaign.

Welsh children suffering from deafness were asked to design posters to show the one thing they would like to change for young deaf people in Wales.

Around 40 posters will be presented to First Minister Rhodri Morgan and Jane Hutt, minister for children, education, lifelong learning and skills, at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on Monday, the beginning of Deaf Awareness Week.

The children’s suggestions include more inclusive sports activities and after-school clubs for deaf children, encouraging children who do not have hearing difficulties to have a better understanding of deafness and helping hearing children to learn sign language.

Jayne Dulson, the charity’s director, said: “This is a great opportunity for young deaf people to actively engage in politics and bring the importance of deaf awareness and deaf issues into the public gaze.

“Their message is loud and clear - what they now need from Rhodri Morgan and Jane Hutt is action.”
