Deaf Boy Dies in Apartment Blaze
A five-year-old boy with hearing impairment died from smoke fumes on Saturday night when a fire engulfed an apartment in Jeddah’s Al-Ammariah district. According to a Civil Defense spokesman, the boy had hid under his bed to escape the fire.
“The fire broke out in one room of the apartment belonging to a family of six,” said Capt. Abdullah Al-Amri, the Civil Defense spokesman. He added that the father was at work when the fire started and that the mother immediately gathered her children to escape before calling the Civil Defense.
“She couldn’t find her fourth boy because he was deaf and mute and couldn’t hear his mother’s call. Apparently, the mother searched the burning apartment for her child, who was hiding under his bed,” he said, adding that four Civil Defense units attended the fire and that the boy was found under his bed.
Al-Amri said that the fire was caused by an electrical surge from an airconditioner in one of the rooms and that the rest of the family escaped unharmed. The boy’s body was transferred to King Abdul Aziz Hospital in Al-Mahjar district.
