PRISCILLA NAVIDAD, 17, lost her hearing six years ago but still goes dancing with friends, sings and even won two beauty pageant titles last year before becoming a housemate for the PBB Teen Edition Plus.
A deaf beauty titlist from Mindanao is so far the hands-down standout among the latest batch of housemates for the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus. She and thirteen other teenage housemates finally went inside the Pinoy Big Brother House on Easter Sunday night to compete for fabulous prizes and a shot at fame with a chance to launch careers in showbusiness.
Seventeen-year-old Priscilla Navidad, dubbed as "the Deaf Dreamer of Davao", went through severe personal difficulties during her childhood, according to information released during the PBB Teen Edition Plus opening night.
When Priscilla was two years old, she had to undergo risky surgery to correct an undisclosed condition. According to PBB, the surgery nearly cost the toddler her life.
By the time Priscilla was six years of age, her father was murdered. At eleven years old, Priscilla lost her hearing. She compensates for her condition through lip-reading. She has so far managed to go to a regular school.
Priscilla also won the Miss Teen Mindanao title and was first runner-up in the Miss Teen Philippines International; she won both titles in 2007.
According to PBB, Priscilla is able to live as normal a life as possible with her two brothers and mother. She likes going out with her friends and counts singing and dancing among her talents.
When asked by PBB hosts Luis Manzano and Toni Gonzaga how she'll be able to communicate with Kuya (Filipino for Big Brother), Priscilla replied that one of the other housemates could relay to her what Kuya is saying, or Kuya could simply write her a letter.
Like all Big Brother counterparts worldwide, PBB's Kuya is never seen by the housemates and maintains contact only as a disembodied voice.
