A day of activities has been planned to mark Guyana's first Deaf Awareness Day on November 27 at the National Park.

According to a release from the Guyana Community-Based Rehabilita-tion Programme [GCBRP], the activities are being organised by the Support Group for Deaf Persons which was established in June 2005, by the GCBRP, in Partnership with the UK-based International Deaf Children Society.

Activities scheduled for Deaf Awareness Day include: a church service beginning at 10 am at Rev Lawrence Hallahan's Church at Flex Gym, Thomas Street, Kitty; a march, which will end in the National Park; skits and dances; a short address by a senior official of the Ministry of Education and the presentation of certificates to participants of a Sign Language Training Programme.

Also in its release the GCBRP stated that the principal purpose of the Support Group for Deaf Persons is to provide a regular and appropriate forum where deaf and hearing-impaired persons their friends and relatives can interact Additionally, regular sign language exercises are held.

The group meets on the first and third Saturdays of every month at the St Stanislaus College, Brickdam from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm.
