THE chairman of West Nile Association for the Deaf, Osman Badru Asega, has said the communication gap between the deaf and other people has contributed greatly to poverty among the deaf, reports Dradenya Amazia.

Speaking in Moyo on Wednesday, Asega said the deaf were not aware of some government programmes like the Northern Uganda social Action Fund (NUSAF) and Community HIV/AIDS Initiative, where the rural poor can access funds to fight poverty.

“Announcements on radio about NUSAF programmes do not benefit the deaf. We are marginalised and our people are suffering as a result,” Asega said through his interpreter, Christine Draleru.

He said the HIV/AIDS infection rate among the deaf was high because they were not informed and educated about the pandemic, hence frustrating the Government’s efforts to fight the disease.
