Navi Mumbai News / Deaf and mute students of Hellen Keller Institute celebrate a rocking Teachers’ Day

‘Teacher’, this word in itself is very powerful. This is a word which reminds all of us of a person who made a fine person out of us. To make the teacher feel special, the children of Helen Keller institution, Kopar-khairne, celebrated their teacher’s Day on September 5th. .The function was organized for the teachers and the parents of the students. The function started with a welcome speech of a deaf student in sign language. The speech was followed by some plays and dance done by the students.

Life had no meaning for deaf and mute Vanessa John Parela (20), until she met her teacher and mentor Mrs.Pradnya. P.Maseekar. She says, in the sign language, “This is through my teacher that I can communicate to you and rest of the world. My teacher has taught me to face the world with pride, to live a civilized and dignified life. She has put me on track.””

Shisna Anand (14), another deaf and mute student still remembers the early days. She says, “I still remember those dark days when I inhabited a world of infinite black of a seamless, endless void where nothing reached me and I reached nothing. But in that devastating isolation, it was through my teacher that now the light of knowledge has penetrated through the dense black world of mine.”

Prabhata Nair, a teacher of the functional academy group says, “It is really a tough job to teach them, as we require much patience. But at the end of the day we are not tired or frustrated but happy. We feel that each day we have achieved something new by teaching them.”

Pradnya Maseekar says, “These children are not like our kids, but they are our kids. We enjoy teaching and playing with them. I think I’ll be incomplete without them. On this day, I’m greeting them ‘Happy teachers Day’, as many times as they were the ones who taught me lessons of life.”
