Deaf and dumb of Dhadkai being rehabilitated: DC (GreaterKashmir.com) 28/9/2006 : 7:18:52 PM

People of Dhadkai village of Doda district, which has attained fame for having the highest number of deaf and dumb persons, has finally something to cheer about. The district administration is seeking army’s help for vocational rehabilitation of these physically challenged people.

A total of 79 persons in Dhadkai village are suffering from the congenital defect. There is not a single family, of the total 42 families, in the village without a deaf or dumb person in it. However, most of the affected persons are above 20 years of age.

Girls being the most affected, it has become difficult for the people here to get matches for their daughters. Since this village is in the militancy-infested area, the security of the deaf and dumb persons has become a matter of concern, for these people can’t respond to emergency situations.

Official sources said since most of the inhabitants of Dhadkai make their living by rearing cattle, the district administration is making efforts to set up cattle rearing units for them.

Although, district administration under a scheme is ready to set up a cattle unit each for the affected families and will provide Rs.50000 for the same but owing to poverty the inhabitants are finding it difficult to provide promoter’s share of Rs.6000.

Sources added that owing to the problem faced by the people of District Development Commissioner, Doda, Pawan Kotwal said, “Yes, we have sought the help of army in providing the promoters share so that cattle units could be set up there for the affected people. Besides, we are roping in their services for the construction of a hostel so that modern facilities are provided to these physically challenged persons.”

Kotwal said after the hostel is constructed, it would “be easy for the state government to tie up with national institutes that would study the prevalence of the congenital defect and other problems faced by these people.” Besides, the DC said, the district administration is also working on a project to recruit specialized teachers for these deaf and dumb persons so that they are imparted education under Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan.
