A DANCE show uniting the deaf and hearing communities will take place in Nelson Mandela Bay this weekend.

Deaf and hearing dancers will perform at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University south campus at the Kraal from 2pm until 5pm tomorrow to raise funds for the Port Elizabeth Deaf Association, a non-profit organisation.

“The donations received at the dance show will be used for a much-needed website for the association, as well as covering the daily running services provided by the centre,” said event organiser Emmy Nxayeka.

“The need in the deaf and hearing communities is great for this service being rendered by the association.

“It will also be able to continue to render this service if subsidising is continued by the department of social services,” she said.

NMMU students, pupils from the Reuben Birin School for the hearing impaired and community members will dance during the show.

Reuben Birin dance teacher Lulu Njekula said the deaf pupils would do Latin American numbers and would dance to the vibration of the music which they felt through the floor.

Njekula said it was still unclear how many pupils would participate in the show as some of them went home at weekends.

The dance styles to be expected during the show will include Latin American, ballroom, hip-hop, modern dancing, house and kwaito.
