Panelists representing the deaf community will dispel myths, discuss deaf multiculturalism and share personal stories of families with both hearing and non-hearing members.

The free event is at 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at MidAmerica Nazarene University’s Bell Cultural Events Center, 2030 E. College Way.

The panelists include Ann Cooper, president of the Kansas Association for the Deaf; Mary Groves, seventh-grade student from Kansas School for the Deaf; Luanne Ward, director of instruction at KSD; Theresa Chandler, who will provide a multicultural parent’s perspective; and Sutha Ramanathan, who will provide a deaf experience from a multicultural perspective.

The facilitator will be Ken Clark, a retired counselor for Kansas School for the Deaf.

Attendees can receive two credits from the Kansas Commission of Deaf/Hard of Hearing. The event is sponsored by the city of Olathe, Americana Jubilee, MidAmerica Nazarene University, Able Hands Interpreting Services, Olathe Public Library, the Mdivani Law Firm LLC, and Ken Hinson’s KHR radio.com.
