Read the Argus Leader piece, covering CSD's temporary layoffs. I really hope this isn't a harbinger of things to come, where such layoffs could turn permanent! :( I know a lot of friends working at CSD and I can only wish the very best for them in terms of job security at CSD.

Still, I wonder why CSD had to resort to furloughs. Something must've happened, that severely impacted CSD and its financial situation. (My pet theory is IP-Relay revenue shortfalls. The FCC must've ordered them to put in IP address blocking, cutting off the Nigerians and such.) I hope it's only a one-time thing, things'll get adjusted, and business will bounce back better than ever.

Two things:

1) This press release mentions nothing about how this will affect relay.

2) The term "lays off" to me is misleading. Unless these people really are no longer receiving health benefits, retirement benefits, or even tax benefits, they are really on unpaid vacation or unpaid employment. I seriously doubt CSD completely terminated their employment benefits. If they did, then everyone "laid off" better not get sick or hurt during that month because they're going to have to pay through the nose for health premiums.

Better yet, none of those employees better receive unemployment benefits.

YEAH..

Even I am suprise that who person handle CSD as non-profit that earn little more than 800,000 a year for himself! I am suprise about this money matter due another non-profit earned 500k or less or who caRe! I rather Deaf community instead have money in pocket. Money is too short for living.

Thanks to Nesmuth, here's the updated Argus Leader piece. More noteworthy is this snippet:
Internet relay minutes, projected by the NECA to reach 8 million in December 2005, dropped to less than 7 million, the second consecutive month of decline. Video relay minutes outpaced projections slightly.
Left unexplained is why there is a decline in ip-relay minutes? I'm very relieved to see Video Relay minutes maintaining their momentum, and hopefully will increase a little bit over time.
