Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist locked up the Republican nomination for governor Tuesday, while the Democratic race was still too close to call by 10:30 p.m.
Leading in the early returns was Jim Davis, who campaigned as a Tallahassee outsider and weathered ferocious attacks from one of the state's most powerful industries. Polls showed state Sen. Rod Smith of small-town Alachua closing in on Davis, a congressman from Tampa.
