Confused about Obama

I'm feeling confused here.

As you've probably noticed I've been very concerned about Obama's stand on animal based research and wether he supports it or not. He says he supports biomedical research. Which I took to mean just animal based reasearch but someone else says it doesn't neccessarily mean that?

I've just recieved this email from another animal rights advocate:

Obama has pledged to support alternative methods and procedures in medical research. He has also stated that he would like to end the use of animals in medical research.

but yesterday I found this on a science website:

"Obama's STEM agenda shows his commitment to investing in the physical and life sciences"

Live sciences is another name for animal based research. So I wonder is Obama is making more promises then he can keep or is either the science community or certain animal rights supporters got things wrong?
