480p has a wider aspect ratio than 480i.
As I said, 480p has more vertical lines than 480i, and 480p is designed for EDTV and HDTV. If you've ever watched DVD in an HDTV, DVD has a max resolution of 854x480; thus, since you have HDTV, you must set your TV to stretch to widescreen. Otherwise, it will become squished when watched with black bars on an EDTV/HDTV.
Also note that "p" in 480p stands for progressive scan. It draws like this:
"i" for interlaced as in 480i, draws on the first pass, then the second pass in 1/30th of a second:
Does your SDTV can output a resolution of 480p? Note that verticle lines will be squished together.
