The Enid News and Eagle, Enid, OK - Co-defendant helps in communicating with deaf man

Help communicating with a deaf defendant came from an unexpected place Tuesday — a co-defendant.

One of the two men arrested Saturday on suspicion of possessing crack cocaine acted as an interpreter for the other suspect in Special District Judge J. Bruce Harvey’s courtroom during arraignments Tuesday.

John D. Valentine, 29, of Enid, used sign language while handcuffed to interpret for the judge, who was speaking to Marvin Lee Doud, of Ringwood, who is deaf.

Valentine and Doud, 26, were both charged with possession of a controlled substance and face a possible sentence of two to 10 years in prison and a fine of no more than $10,000.

According to court documents, Valentine and Doud were stopped by police near 3rd and Wabash after police saw the vehicle was stopped in the street with its lights off and another man was reaching into the car.

When police stopped the car, Doud was driving and Valentine again acted as interpreter.

When Doud gave police permission to search his vehicle, police found two rock-like substances that tested positive for cocaine content, according to an affidavit.

When police asked Doud about the substances he suggested they could have been rocks from a county road. When police told him it tested positive for cocaine content, Doud shrugged his shoulders “in a motion that he did not know what I was talking about,” according to the affidavit.

Both men were given $3,000 bonds and were ordered to appear in court Oct. 10 for bond appearances. Harvey told Doud he would secure an interpreter for him at his next appearance.
