Salt Lake Tribune - Classes will be offered in sign language

Under an agreement with the federal government, the Utah College of Massage Therapy will now provide sign language interpreters for its deaf students.

The deal stems from a review of whether Utah College was complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act, which began after the U.S. Department of Justice received complaints from students and applicants that they encountered resistance when they asked for an interpreter.

While the investigation was ongoing last year, the school was sold to the Nassau, Bahamas-based Steiner Leisure Limited. The new owner then worked with federal authorities to reach the settlement announced last week.

The Justice Department praised Steiner for taking steps to ensure that deaf and hard-of-hearing people can enroll at the school.

The school is based in Salt Lake City and has seven campuses in Utah, Arizona, Colorado and Nevada.
