Clarke School for the Deaf names new president - Boston.com

Clarke School for the Deaf has chosen William Corwin, an attorney and advocate for disadvantaged children, as its new president, the school's board of trustees said.

Corwin is the chief strategic development officer for the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Association in Seattle, which recruits, trains and supervises volunteers who are matched with abused and neglected children living in foster care.

Corwin -- the father of two deaf children -- will begin his job at Clarke on July 1, succeeding retiring president Dennis Gjerdingen, who has led the school for 26 years.

The 140-year-old school teaches hearing impaired children how to communicate without using sign language. Instead, children are taught to speak and are prepared to be mainstreamed into traditional classrooms.

The concept of teaching deaf children to speak began at Clarke in 1867, and remains its central mission.
