City to mark week for the deaf - Fiji Times Online

THE hearing impaired find it difficult to communicate with the public because a lot of people don't understand sign language, says Fiji Association of the Deaf general secretary Leona Tamainai.

Mrs Tamainai said there was a need for people, especially families, to lean sign language.

She said deaf and mute people found it difficult to communicate in public when using public transportation, taxis, shopping and television etc. A deaf and mute person, she said, would not understand any program on television or films that doesn't have subtitles.

Mrs Tamainai said there was good support from society towards the association, but there was still a need to raise awareness on other issues that need to be addressed.

She said a public march would proceed this Friday through the capital city to mark International Deaf Week.

The march, she said would start at 9.30am from the Flee Market to Sukuna Park.

Mrs Tamainai urged people for their support to join the march and raised awareness to assist people who have hearing impaired.

The event was also a time for people to understand the difficult situation deaf and mute people are face.
