I am born deaf and am looking to learn more about wireless commuictions for deaf people like myself. I discovered this forum so I though I'll post some question and see if anyone can assist me with it.

My work now require me to have some type of moblie device that would allow me to commucite with hearing folks and I been looking at all sort of PDA.

I have narrow down to Cingluar 8125 or wait for the new 8525 that suppose to be out soon but I got some question for those who uses PDAs for thier wireless commuction needs to contact hearing folks.

I notice some PDA models you can get a third party ip relay software like Sidekick and Blackberry etc but I have looked into Sidekick and Blackberry and both see not what I am seeking in and I didn't find any third party software for the Pocket PC so is there one that I may have missed?

Those who own a 8125 models or a Pocket PC simlar to it ie 6700 etc how do you call out to hearing people? Using IP browser support? and also how do hearing people call you or leave a message to you if your not in the area or unable to answer the phone? Also are you able to tether your laptop to it without having to pay extra fees other than paying for an unlimited pda data plan for like 40 a month?

Also I know data is not widely covered as voice is so how do you contact hearing people using just voice cell services? Some type of SMS messaging services? My work will require me to travel to a bunch of small towns and I am sure lot of them do not have data cells tower avaiable or in range etc.

Thank you for your inputs!

Before you go ahead with handheld/pager of your choice, talk to your employer(s) first. Some employers don't want their employees to have built-in camera and other stuff like you find on many handheld/pagers. They can probably get you get one cheaper or at no charge through the company.

Yeah I been hearing postive thing about cingular over other providers and most likely will go with cingular provider.

I would still like to know how do you contact or commuciate with hearing folks on cell phones or how do they commuicate with you?

I would like to learn as much as possible on how deaf people like us can benfit from cell phones.

Thank you for your inputs!

I am self-employed so the busniess I run will be covering the expenses of the cell or wireless phone/pda.

Also I do believe that camera does not belong on a cell phone and should never been a standard feature on cell phone but offered as a optional feature.

If you have a Windows Mobile 5 device (like a PPC 6700 or Treo 700wx) you can download and use SprintIP Relay to make free calls. Download here directly to your Windows Mobile device:

http://www.sprintrelay.com/download/wm

Should download a file like SprintRelay-1.2.13.cab. Install and have fun!

Wow that is cool, Thanks for letting me know about this software. I will surely check it out!

Does this software only allow outgoing ip relays to hearing folks?

How does incoming relay calls works for you from hearing folks? What software or services do you use?

Thanks!
Bill

I personally like Cingular but I don't like Sprint or Nextel cuz they are similar like TMobile but costs higher than T Mobile.

Cingular is good that I am using 8700c.

To set up the phone number to able directly to your AIM or MSN to Register Phone number at IP-Relay.com. It is free to call that you will able using your AIM with phone number that they can reach you.

Only one thing is fee

Depending on where the voice caller is calling from and the number you are assigned, there may be a long distance toll charge.

My understanding is that it's outgoing calls only. The technology to allow incoming calls hasn't been widespread just yet, from what I hear. However, if you want, PM me and I'll tell you a tip I use to get incoming calls.

You might want to check out the new BlackJack---

MultiVu | CINGULAR, SAMSUNG HAVE ACE IN HAND WITH LAUNCH OF NEW BLACKJACK(TM) SMART DEVICE

They release on the same day as 8525. One thing I noticed about this is they did mention that they have AIM/MSN/Y!. while the other did not.

The reviews are showing lot of good remarks about this model. The only con about this is it did not have wifi.

That a nice looking PDA, but it doesn't mention anything about allowing you to tether laptop to the PDA or using the PDA as a cell voice modem outside range of data cell towers.

So I probably will stick with the 8125 or the 8525 becasue it been proven that the 8125 can be tethered to a laptop and it works and since the 8525 is simlar to the 8125 with the 3G support I am sure it most likly it can be tethered to a laptop as well too.

Not yet, I am waiting to learn more about the ppc 6700 and Wireless Relay Data Plan from Sprint.

Bill

I brought the ppc 6700 and downloaded the sprint wm relay software and installed it but when I tried it out, I get a message cannot or unable to connect to relsy service.

I know the ppc 6700 is working because I am now making this post on this forum with it.

Does anyyone know what I may be missing or doing wrong?

I was told by SPRINT that I can use VCO on this phone but I don't know how yet and if anyone can help me with this via PM etc

Thanks

Sprint WM5 Relay is working on the ppc6700 today and maybe yesterday that the relay server was down and the WM5 relay could not connect to it so it got an error. But it seem to be a nice software so I will have to use it some more to see how it works so far.

I am starting to like the ppc 6700 and learning more new things on it everyday.

Versichat seem no longer support the software and sold it to another company now and they don't see to offer it for sale anymore so I don't know what will happen from there.

I found 2 nice messager software that look good.

One is called Agile Messenger and it 30 dollar a year but look real nice and only vibrates when someone send you IM if it not in the foreground and alerts you a IM.

I wish the username tab would flash when a user send you a IM while you are talking with a different user.

Agile Mobile - Software for Mobile Phones They offer 7 days free trials.

and the second IM is called IM+ and it nice too but it only set to vibrate on each and every IM recieved so it's annoying when your phone is vibrating when your IM'ing with someone and there no options I can find to stop the phone vibrating when your already IM'ing or IM+ is in the foreground.

IM+ only cost 39 dollar one time .. No yearly fees etc.

If they add not to vibrate when your are using IM+ to chat with someone then I might like it but right now I think I will stick with Agile Messenger.

SHAPE Services - Products :: Software for PDA and mobiles: MSN, Yahoo!, AOL, ICQ, Jabber, LCS, Sametime IM+ is offer the same 7 days free trial only.
