Its good video, and gotta warn ya, its VERY GRAPHIC. If you got strong stomach, feel free to watch it..

CI Surgery

Please no bashing... that just its medicial produce for anyone who are very curious like myself.

That was a very long surgery to watch and I tried to stomach it then almost turned it off so I could catch my breath but I was very fantasticed too much to stop watching the CI surgery.

I have a question be honest, does it really hurt ? The hole that was drilled was big and that would hurt anybody's head. It looks like a small inscision but the work that went into it then when I wake up, I imagine has gotta hurt for sure. :eek3:

Thank you Racheleggert for the video clip of the CI surgery.

Excellent clip, but boring to see all the drilling.
Obviously the film is taken through the microscope. The implant seemed a bit big, so I think it's a bit enlarged.

Otherwise, nice.
Thanks.

thanks for the video! this is AB's Bionic Ear surgery the implant is HiRes 90K which is newer than mine, a CII. Basically same things but different casing design. ( C stand for Clarion so Clarion 2.0 in other sense )

Yes, Indeed.. notice the hands (in green gloves) looks bigger than life if you place your hand against the screen to compare.

The video was not very long because it is edited so the boring unimportant part of surgery is not shown. The video just showed the important steps in CI surgery.

Okay, what about how much does it really hurt after surgery ?

Yea, it would hurt when you aren't sleep before surgery is start, also IV helps to reduce the injuries in head.

Depends I guess..
My daughter, 2 at the time, wanted to play again 3 to 4 hours after the surgery. The only medication she had after the operation (bi-lateral (both sides) in 1 operation) was 1 asprine. That's all.
After the IV was out of her foot (4 hrs after the operation) she was gung-ho to ride the tricycle!!

But, I have heared other stories from adults here that had CI, and they seemed to have more pain after the operation...

Really? that's different.

In US, most IV was went in hand on most patients.

No, it is not IV that put us to sleep. A anesthesiologist inject anesthesia (numbing agent) into IV tube then again on surgery table, surgeon will inject local anesthesia on ear area.

But General anesthesia methods varies. Gas or Injection. In some case, just local anesthesia. I had general anesthesia by injection via IV tube.

IV = Intravenous used to feed saline solution to keep patient from dehydrated. But it is not the only thing. Many different solutions are fed via IV as in Intravenous drips or IV Therapy.

To reduce pains, Morphine or similar are used via shot or pills.

Heath, When I woke up, I didn't scream in agony though *shrug* just that I felt like I have been slammed to ground. Some CI stories I have read mentioned feeling like he/she has been hit by a train or car. I was already given a painkiller anyway.. When I got home, I bought Rx Tylenol type 3 (codeine) for local ear soreness and ease swelling.

Wow! I was surprised to watch the clip as long as I did -- I normally hate needles and would not even look! Thanks (and Boult it helped that you stated that it is larger than it actually is -- I compared with my hands too and see how HUGE it was made out to be)

WOW! Amazing how they do it during the surgery. It didn't bother me at all! Even I ate breakfast while watching it!

Okay Thank you Boult, now that makes more sense. I was very skeptical when alots of people told me it does not hurt after CI surgery. It is very honest feedback that helps me to make an accurate decision and I think I am going to go ahead with the CI surgery when I talk to my VR counselor. I thought codeine was banned in the U.S.A. and that I had to order codeine from Canada but I went online to see if I could buy some for after CI surgery and the Tylenol type 3 can be bought at:

MedsForCost.com - MedsForCost.com

Tylenol type 3 (codeine) is sold by prescription only that's why I said "Rx" All drug stores has them. I got mine from walgreen that day.

It depends on each person. For some, it don't hurt that much, for others it hurts a hell of a lot.

And Codeine isn't banned in the USA. But you are required to get a prescription from your doctor to get it, and you have to have a good reason to get it.

Okay, what about how much does it really hurt after surgery ?

I had minmal pain - just a dull headache and a little bit of dizziness. All I took after my surgery was extra strength Motrin. I didn't need or want anything stronger than that.

Great video - I was fortunate enough to be able to watch a CI implantation live last year at St Paul's Hospital, it was an amazing experience.

That really depends. I have NOT had the surgery, but I've had other surgeries. I can attest to this...

Surgery tends to be a lot easier on children than adults. Adults tend to be huge babies when it comes to pain and such.

:giggle:

Codeine is most certainly not banned in the US. If it were, I'd not be able to take it last year when I had two life threatening infections and needed pain relief.
