Chicago Work Opportunity for People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Access Living of Metropolitan Chicago is currently seeking highly-motivated individuals to work as Fair Housing Testers. This is an opportunity for you to contribute to our efforts to create more affordable, available, and accessible housing in Chicago.

At Access Living, we focus primarily on disability-based fair housing testing. The test procedure involves sending a person with a disability (for example, someone who uses a wheelchair, or who has a visual or hearing impairment) to visit a housing provider and express interest in renting an apartment. Then, a person who is of the same age, race, and gender--but who does not have a disability--visits the same provider to express interest in renting the same apartment. Each tester completes a comprehensive report, including a detailed narrative describing their experience with the housing provider. If the reports reveal evidence of discrimination, we take enforcement action to educate and hold housing providers accountable.

Testers are compensated $75 for an in-person site visit and $25 for a telephone test. Expenses for transportation to and from site visits, and for postage for mailing in test reports, are reimbursed.

Qualified individuals will be observant, detail-oriented, possess excellent communication skills, and write proficiently in English. People 21 years of age or older with and without disabilities are encouraged to apply. Computer or data entry experience is recommended. In an effort to match some of our current testers, we are looking especially for:

· People who are deaf
· People who are hard of hearing

To apply, please submit your resume, and a one-page writing sample that demonstrates your ability to write descriptively. Send via e-mail to Jamie Wichman: jwichman@accessliving.org, telephone 312-640-2147. Please feel free to contact Jamie with your questions.

Access Living is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
