http://www.thetidenews.com/article....tension – Commissioner&qrColumn=CENSUS UPDATE

The Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission (NPC) Rivers State, Mr. Bello Abubakar Wudil has described as untrue the insinuation that the intention of conducting the head count was to elongate the tenure of office of serving political office holders across the nation.

Mr. Wudil made this clarification on Thursday in his office, in Port Harcourt while speaking on interactive interview with The Tide. He said that the essence of census was to plan and take care of the citizens across the country.

He noted that the nation can not effectively plan for her citizens if the total number of citizens was not known.

The federal commissioner who was transferred from Kano State to Rivers State said that the benefit of census was to plan for development stressing that the controversies that greeted the last census in the country were as a result of not making everybody a stakeholder in the exercise.

Mr. Wudil stated that the present exercise put everybody a stakeholder in the exercise, stressing that now everything in the exercise are scientific, adding that they have nothing to hide. He said that ethnicity problems has also been taken care of by adding that those thinkings and feelings will not unify the country rather they would do more harms to the country, he stated.

Speaking on the fate of the insane, dumb and deaf people in the society, the commissioner said arrangement has been concluded on how to involve them in the exercise.

He stated that for the insane people in the society, “we reach them between the zero hours of 12p.m while those of the deaf and dumb will be counted along side the family members.”

The commissioner said over 40 billion naira has so far been expended on the exercise stating that the Federal Government fund the 50% of the amount, while EU fund the 50% of the total amount involved.

He advised Nigerians as a whole to utilise the opportunity and be counted so as to enable the Federal Government plan good for the citizens.
