The Manly Daily | Manly Local News
WHILE the Socceroos are currently in an intense battle to qualify for the next World Cup, there's one Australian football team that's already booked their spot on the international stage.
The Australian Deaf Olympic team has qualified to compete at their first World Championships in Greece in July and the people of the peninsula can play a big part in helping them get there.
NSW Premier League highflyers Manly United are hosting a special celebrity match at Cromer Park on June 15 with all proceeds helping the team get to Greece.
The Australian Deaf team will take on celebs including seven-time world champion surfer Layne Beachley, former Australian rugby and football captains Nick Farr-Jones and Alex Tobin and Sea Eagles great Cliff Lyons.
Channel Seven personality Anthony Peridis, a presenter on Sydney Weekender is another confirmed starter and said being a part of the event was something he was thrilled to be a part of.
"My younger brother is disabled so I understand how tough it is for someone to do the stuff we all take for granted," he said.
"I've always said it doesn't matter if your throwing marbles, if your representing Australia that's a massive honour."
"The Socceroos get a lot of recognition and rightly so but these are the teams that really make football.
"It's great to be help out and hopefully get a lot of support for these guys."
Anyone can be a part of the fundraiser, with organisers auctioning off a spot on the bench of the star-studded celebrity team.
To make a bid to play with the team phone Brian Seymour on 0419 542 430.
