Canada Funds Small Satellite Platform Demonstration
The Canadian government is funding a technology demonstration program designed to give the nation a domestic capability to build small satellite platforms.
The Cassiope mission, scheduled for launch in 2007, will carry a demonstration communications payload and a scientific payload on a new small satellite platform that will be developed by Canadian industry, officials from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates said Feb. 6.
MacDonald Dettwiler, based in Richmond, British Columbia, will lead development of the spacecraft and ground segment, which is being funded by a 140 million Canadian dollar ($106.6 million) contribution from the CSA and Technology Partnerships Canada, a government agency that funds research and development efforts.
The CSA is providing 63 million Canadian dollars for the program, while Technology Partnerships Canada will contribute 77.2 million Canadian dollars.
