Camden's Danielle Tyerman selected for Australian Deaf Games - Netball - Sport - Macarthur Chronicle Campbelltown Edition

CAMDEN & District Netball Association netballer Danielle Tyerman has broken down the barriers to become the association’s first Australian Deaf Games representative.

The 18-year-old, of Camden South, has been selected to play for the NSW Lightning netball team at the 2012 Games from January 12 to 24 in Geelong.

Her selection offers a further opportunity to trial for the 2012 Paralympics.

Tyerman, who was born profoundly deaf, had cochlear implants fitted when she was 2 1/2.

She joined Camden RSL Netball Club in 2006 in the 13 years age group.

Her mother, Lee Tyerman, said this was the first year Danielle had trialled for the Games, which are held every four years.

``She saw an advertisement and thought she’d try out. She’s also a squad swimmer but nominations for the swimming had closed,’’ Mrs Tyerman said.

Club president Mark Leahy said he remembered Danielle as a young player who was ``keen as mustard’‘.

``In the beginning there were many obstacles but she persisted and overcame them all,’’ he said. The improvement in her skills in this last year has been amazing,’’ he said.

``Camden RSL Netball Club is very proud of her. She is proof that hard work does pay off and you can achieve against the odds.’‘

Team coach Julie Scholte also praised the young star, who has been voted most consistent player two years running. ``She is a girl who never gives up and is always passionate about the game,’’ she said. ``I am really proud of her and in awe of her improvement in the last year.’‘
