WTKR.COM YOUR NEWSCHANNEL 3 - Cafe Caters To Deaf Patrons

There are just two places in the world where a cafe is a quiet place.

Paris has its own deaf cafe and now so does Madrid. Everything is quiet here. No sounds and no communication problems. Everyone speaks the same language: their voice is their hands.

It is Maria Angeles's first day here. She says that everything is easier for her here.

"Everyone speaks my language and they understand me, I feel at home here," she says.

In another bar calling the waiter is a problem, but here they do it by pressing a light installed in the table. Waiters, cookers, mantre d's - all of them use sign language.

Veronica is a waitress here and she tells us that she feels twice as helpful. Deaf people are forced to make an effort in normal bars and that doesn't happen here; there's no misunderstanding.

However, the aim of this place is not to become a ghetto with exclusive access for the deaf. It is open to those whose understanding goes beyond language as we normally know it.
