Yesterday, some interesting documents arrived in my postal mail box!

The American Athletic Association of the Deaf's (AAAD) president's report on the World Games for the Deaf held in Los Angeles in 1985 had these interesting comments in it:

1) "The XV World Games for the Deaf, held at Los Angeles, California, from July 10th through the 20th, 1985, turned out to be a mixture of some very good to some very poorly planned events, which in turn drew the ire of many foreign countries"

2) "Much turmoil within the LAOC ( Los Angeles Organizing Committee ) resulted in poor planning and affected the exeution of what should have been an outstanding moment in America's deaf history"

3) "A very large majority of athletes from other countries were very greatly dismayed and disappointed in the United States, we had several instances where atheletes were extremely hostile when they were unable to obtain information, directions, transportation, etc. These circumstances resulted in many letters of protests from foreign countries, as well as from within the United States, which complained bitterly of conditions, preparations, locations, and handling of the games."

4) "Any future bids to sponsor the World Games for the Deaf within the United States will be made through the AAAD Board of Directors and will be sponsored by the AAAD. Bids may not made through any club, individual, or organization committee, but through a committee under the AAAD."

I wonder if the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness had any role in these olympic sized anomolies that happened in 1985.
