Butterfly empowers deaf - Northland news on Stuff.co.nz
It’s deaf but still independent which is why the humble butterfly has been chosen as the symbol for this year’s New Zealand Sign Language week.
The week’s aim is to bring awareness that sign language is New Zealand’s third official language and for people to recognise it as part of Kiwi culture.
Deaf Association Northland has a week of events planned in Whangarei where people can learn the language.
"It is about understanding and hopefully people will want to learn sign language more," says Catherine Bagley, community relations officer for Deaf Association Northland.
The association runs classes throughout the year where people can
learn sign language.
The awareness week runs from Monday next week.
Events include
- A signathon in Cameron St Mall from 9am to 4.30pm on Tuesday, where anyone can take a free 10-minute sign language class.
- Sign language classes at local schools and at child care centres from Wednesday to Friday.
- Free 45-minute taster sign language classes at the Whangarei Library at 9.30am and 11am on Saturday and Sunday.
The Deaf Association of New Zealand was formed in November 1977 and in the North provides services to more than 100 people in Northland.
