Busy summer ahead for deaf kids | Mansfield News Journal | mansfieldnewsjournal.com

Do It Deaf in North Central Ohio kicks off Wednesday, and all deaf and hard-of-hearing youngsters in the area are welcome to attend.

Lynn Feldman of the Rehab Center said the summer youth program, sponsored by Advocate for Kids, is in its sixth year.

"We collaborate with four other community centers for the deaf, including Akron, Canton, Youngstown and Cleveland, and we plan a one-day event in their own regions -- all on different days," Feldman said.

"Mansfield will kick it off and all the kids from other regions will attend each of the events. This way they have something to do all summer long."

Feldman said she expects 15 local kids.

From 10 to noon on Wednesday at the Rehab Center, participants will engage in games and activities organized by a few of the deaf adults involved in the program.

At noon, Richland County Transit buses will transport the group to Richland Carrousel Park for lunch, carousel rides and entertainment by Clowns for Kids, which is also sponsoring that portion of the day.

At 2 p.m., Richland Academy will host a hip-hop workshop at its studios.

"They are so excited about the dancing -- even our adults are excited," Feldman said. "Even though they can't hear, they can feel the vibrations."

The day will conclude around 4 p.m.

"The biggest reason we do this over the summer is that communication skills tend to suffer during this time, plus they're pretty isolated during summer months and this is a way to keep them involved and allow them to meet other kids deaf or hard of hearing," Feldman said. "It helps them build socialization skills and awareness.

"These kids don't have the best self-esteem sometimes. They see themselves as different from the rest of the world, and we want to show them they're not different."
