TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida's crime rate dropped for the 14th straight year in 2005 to its lowest mark since 1971 because of tougher laws, increased financial support from the Legislature and law-abiding citizens with guns, Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday.

"This report shows that staying tough on crime works," said Bush. "Law abiding citizens that have guns for protection actually probably are part of the reason we have a lower crime rate."

The crime rate, compiled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, decreased 3.7 percent from 4,855 crimes per 100,000 people in 2004 to 4,677 crimes per 100,000 people last year. The total included 881 murders, 12,230 rapes and 75,204 vehicle thefts.

In 2005, the state's law enforcement agencies reported 838,063 crimes compared to 850,490 in 2004, a 1.5 percent decrease.

Last year Bush signed a bill that allows people who feel threatened on the street, in a bar, at a ball game — or just about anywhere — to "meet force with force" to defend themselves without fear of being prosecuted.

"You send a real powerful signal when you know the citizen has a good potential of being armed and doesn't have to back off anymore," said John Birch, president of the Illinois-based Concealed Carry, Inc.

Opponents, however, have said the idea would legalize shootouts in the streets.

A telephone message left for comment after hours with the The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence in Washington, D.C. was not immediately returned.

Bush said he was concerned about the number of murders in the Jacksonville and Orlando areas, where there have already been 120 homicides this year.

FDLE chief Jerry Bailey said he has assigned seven agents to help Jacksonville officials with the troubling increase in murders and is working with law enforcement in central Florida on forming a task force.

The number of violent crimes in 2005 increased statewide by 1.7 percent although the rate dropped 0.6 percent and nonviolent crime decreased by 4.2 percent. Violent crimes are murder, forcible sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault.

SEE THERES YOUR SOLUTION TO CRIME!!

GUNS

You see its legal in florida to carry a gun in your car without a permit and COPS Cant do shit about it.And Its Legal to carry guns in your home and if the intruder walks on your property you yell stop if he doesnt you can legaly shoot him and cops cant do shit about it except call an Medic and take the crook to the hospital and No charges will be filed on you.Cops dont protect you,All they care about is protecting their own self intrest and collecting their paychecks.Just like that rapist in NYC was attepting to rape the girl in a parking garage she took the pepper spray and defending herself sprayed the pepper spray on the rapist eyes tempoary blinding him.She called 911 on her cell phone and when cops got there they arrested the rapist but they turn right around and confiscated the girls pepper spray bottle and citated her $175.00 Cops told her pepper sprays are illegal in NEW YORK CITY. See cops dont give a crap about the vitcim and Governor Jeb Bush signed Floridas new make my day laws which takes the power away from the police and let the private citizens protect themselves which the police cant do.

No offense...

Guns---More homicides but it's true...

California have low crime rate in percent than Florida though.

Hong Kong, London, Tokyo, Toronto, Madrid, Sydney, Vancouver, Paris and many cities in other countries have low crime than USA since gun is banned.

I think its NY law for some reason but not sure about concern.

Check out about crime in USA
http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm

Population in USA will hit 300 million since murder was 15,000 then its lower than in 70's, 80's and early 90's.

That's wonderful job for USA but murder will around under 3,000 or less when guns are banned and get out of market.

Look at where i used to live.West Virgina! 45th!! Why cause people respect one another there they dont go looking around to steal cars or robbing stores or steal things out of peoples homes or do drugs in school.

Let's see you use the pepper spray on a fanatical hell bent suicidal bomber and see how that goes with the terrorist or would you prefer a handgun to stop the suicide bomber before he presses that red button ?

Isn't it reasonable that a woman would want a handgun in her purse to prevent rape ?

Personally, I think pepper sprays are a joke. The pepper spray only buys you time and if you have many men then you can take control of the bad guy. I also think how the pepper spray is being used today is the wrong way. Never spray a pepper spray on your own alone. You want people to be able to control the bad guy then lick your finger to feel where the wind is then spray in the direction of the wind into the bad guy's face.

You can shoot a bad guy with a handgun alone and still be able to stop the bad guy if properly trained to use a handgun and hold the gun back to shoot so that the bad guy can't reach your arm and you have really stopped a criminal from hurting you or your family. Which one do you prefer a pepper spray or a handgun ?

I'm going fix your sentence. Just use spacebar...

Now, fix is done

Well, In elementary school since students are hearing and don't need pay attention except for writing on broad but deaf students must pay attention to interpreters, both of elementary school and middle school, deaf students must pay attention to interpreter since what teacher said. If you are in high school then interpreter and teacher are back off but if you don't pay attention to them then toobad. In CSDR, all students must pay attention to teachers or you will punish or other something. If teacher hit or touch at me then I will sue them but its illegal to hit on students.
