A car and bus collision in Norfolk Friday morning sent a sailor to the hospital. The bus was carrying four students to the Hampton School for the Deaf and Blind. The car turned into the path of the bus. The only one injured was the passenger in the car.
Al Woods was in the intersection of West Little Creek Road and Newport Avenue and was nearly hit in the crash.
"It looks like the bus had a green light. The bus had gotten through the light and it looks like the car attempted to make a left turn and didn't make it." Woods was on the way to Naval Station Norfolk and saw it was a fellow sailor pinned in the passenger seat. "He's trying to move, He's very disoriented. I just let him know that I was a sailor I was there for him do what we've been trained to do. You take care of your own."
Crews had to cut off the car's roof to get the man out of the car. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
As for the four students on the bus, Woods said they were not injured but very shaken. "It looked like they were kids with special needs they all looked fine. They weren't crying. They were kind of confused, some of them, I think, were blind couple of them were autistic, but they looked ok."
The bus driver is cleared of any wrongdoing. He drove the kids away on a replacement bus.
The passenger of the car was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. Police say the driver of the car, a juvenile, is being charged with failure to yield and reckless driving.
