QUICK thinking and a steady nerve from five -year-old Bryce saved the day when his deaf mum suddenly went into labour last Sunday.

Phoebe Quinn Ashenden arrived at 11am on Sunday, August 26 at a healthy 4.735kg at the family's Kellyville Ridge home.

His parents Amanda and Chris Ashenden are profoundly deaf so couldn't make the emergency call themselves - meaning Bryce had to call paramedics and his nanna to come and help.

"While Bryce is familiar with ringing his nanna daily, we are grateful that his childcare centre Hunnypots at Glenwood have been visited by the Police and Fire services this year and spoken about ringing triple-0 in an emergency," Mrs Ashenden said.

"We have talked with Bryce about it and also mentioned that you can ring triple 0 for an ambulance.

"We are lucky Bryce is able to remember his address and could tell the emergency services."

Mrs Ashenden said her Sunday had started like any other day, until the pains started.

"As we are both deaf he needed to ring Norwest Private Hospital using the National Relay service on the computer.

"While he was doing that I asked Bryce to ring his nanna and tell her the baby was coming.

"About five minutes later I felt the baby drop and the head start crowning.

"I yelled out to Bryce to ring an ambulance and tell them I was having a baby.

"Five to 10 minutes later my in-laws Lynne and Dennis arrived.

"The hospital rang back and talked Lynne through everything."

She said five minutes later the ambulance arrived, just in time to clamp the cord, which Chris cut, and take her and the baby to hospital.

While Phoebe ended up in special care for 24 hours, the family is now back home.

"Bryce and Chloe absolutely adore their sister Phoebe too!"
