Bookshine packs on offer to help deaf children read
DEAF children and their parents and carers in Cornwall are being offered free copies of Bookshine, a new pack which has been specifically designed to help them discover books together.
The new Bookshine packs, launched at Padstow Library, have been produced by Bookstart, the national Books for Babies programme that aims to encourage parents and carers to share books with children from the earliest possible age by giving free books and advice on reading for their parents.
The Bookstart scheme is run through Family Learning, part of Cornwall Adult Education Service after funding from the European Social Fund to support the programme.
Heather Hunt, Cornwall's Bookstart co-ordinator, said: “There are 35,000 deaf children in the UK. It is vital that all babies and children are given the opportunity to learn about the joys of reading. Deaf children often learn in a visual way, so it is important to encourage reading at an early age.
“The Bookshine pack contains a range of books with colourful illustrations and different textures to touch and feel which has been specifically selected with the needs of deaf babies and children in mind.”
● Any parent or carer of a deaf child aged up to four is entitled to receive a free Bookshine pack in addition to their Bookstart, Bookstart+ or My Bookstart Treasure Chest pack.
Parents should ask their health visitor, library or nursery for details on how to receive the Bookshine pack.
The free pack, aimed at parents and carers of deaf children up to and including the age of four, has been developed in partnership with the National Deaf Children's Society and parents of deaf children.
It includes a touch and feel book, a nursery rhyme book featuring simple British Sign language (BSL) signs and an image of a child with a hearing aid to enable deaf children to see themselves in books, a nursery rhyme place mat, a recommended book list and guidance materials for parents and carers.
