Hello!

I'm an aspiring writer working on a new project and one of my main characters is deaf.

I would love any insights you can share about how deafness is approached in fiction, and especially what in your opinion is not usually handled appropriately. Do writers underestimate (or overestimate) the importance of deafness? Are the deaf characters as well-drawn as the others?

Basically I would love advice on what not to do. Thanks aplenty for reading!

I have not - I'm just reading the summary on Amazon and it sounds interesting. Hopefully the library can help me out!

There are several books you can check out.

"Hands of My Father: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents, and the Language of Love" by Myron Uhlberg.

"Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language: Hereditary Deafness on Martha's Vineyard" by Nora Ellen Grouse.

"Deafening" by Frances Itani.

"d/Deaf and d/Dumb: A Portrait of a Deaf Kid As a Young Superhero" by Joseph Michael Valente.

"Inside Deaf Culture" by Carol A. Padden and Tom L. Humphries.

"Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture" by Carol A. Padden and Tom L. Humphries.

"Through Deaf Eyes: A Photographic History of an American Community" by Douglas Baynton, Jack R. Gannon and Jean Lindquist Bergey.

There are more you can look up.
