Seven members of a professionaltestant sect in Bolivia were sentenced to twofiveyears each in prison for raping a few100 women in an agrarian commune, the judge and prosecutors told the clicking.An eighth man was sentenced to twelve.fiveyears in prison for professionalviding a narcotic thon the lads sprayed to render the girlsunmindfulbefore raping them within the ir dormitories, said Judge Luis Enrique Perez."The victims were raped in a repeated manner. some of them, there have been adults, youngstersand elderly women," prosecutor Freddy Perez was quoted as saying by El Dia brand newspaper.The eight Mennonite men, aged between 18 and four5, were sentenced during an in depthd hearing this week at Palmasola prisonwithin the Santa Cruz region.They were arrested in June 200ninewhen an investigation was launched after one of the maximumvictims awoke at the same time asbeing attacked.the professionalsecutor said a ninth alleged accomplice was still at large.Mennonites are orthodox Protestants who reject wealth and tool and cling to a pacifist philosophy.They live, just like the Amish, in isolated communities ccept varying degrees of integration with modern society.After fleeing religious persecution in Europe within the 19th century, they settled first within the U.S. but spread to South America, where as much as 40,000 Mennonites live today in agrarian colonies in Paraguay and Bolivia.
