Blu-ray 'Has Five Years Left,' Says Samsung Exec - Switched

"While we can't say if it represents a general sentiment at Samsung or not, the company's UK director of consumer electronics, Andy Griffiths, sure went out on a bit of a limb in a recent interview with Pocket-lint, with him saying that Blu-ray has, to paraphrase David Bowie, only "five years left," and that he "certainly wouldn't give it ten." He did say, however, that he thought 2008 would be Blu-ray's year, adding that "it's going to be huge", and that Samsung is "heavily back-ordered at the moment."

As for Samsung's future after Blu-ray's supposed demise, Griffiths seems to think that OLED will be the next big thing, and he's pegging 2010 as a possible date for it to become mainstream and replace LCD. He didn't offer a prediction as to when it will die out though."

What do you think????

I believe it. Technology is changing very fast. And, it seems the Blu-ray format hasn't really taken off compared to DVD format.

I spent $150 for a BD-ROM drive (Blu-ray Disc) and Blu-ray is great, in my opinion. Still, 25GB can be pretty expensive for just a single disc -- about 5 times higher than a 4.7GB DVD.

I don't think so....it will last longer than that. It makes no sense to switch to other format too soon. Blu Ray is here to stay, period. That article is all BS.

DVD has been for 11 years since BD is only 2 years old.

In 11 years ago, DVD were expensive at time, same with CD in late 80's and early 90's, we got first DVD player in 1998 and it was $400, also first DVD-ROM drive in Dell PC in 1999 and it was similar price of BD-ROM drive.

Back in 1993, Macintosh with CD drive is so expensive, we went got first Macintosh LC with floppy disk only, that sad.

Yup, got agree with you.

BD would become more mainstream in after 2010 like happened to DVD in after 2000, probably become dominant in next 5-8 years later when BD is getting cheaper.

I felt that disc is a best to storage than storage in HDD because it can goes wrong at anytime. I'm await for Blu-ray player go down on cost.

I'd rather wait till dust settles. But personally, I just don't like CD, DVD, BR cuz they get scratched and crapped out easily. This sucks. Hopefully they will have better storage or movie meduim that wouldn't get scratched or breaks in half. I know Flashdrive may be in use for future when price goes down. Rental movies would be in flash drive. Or something better.

Blu-ray is scratch-proof.
